You could be right. I used to try to short AOL and AMZN when the longs were gloating like crazy - never panned out. I can remember when people would use 300 times estimated earnings on AOL to predict the future stock price, and this worked for over 12 months. Amazing.

In the case of ASTN, I think the shorts here will be extremely quiet when they are in command. They don't want to bring much attention to their position/activities. On the other hand, when things begin to turn against them, they will begin getting nervous and begin trying to talk the stock back down. Therefore, I view the lack of short banter as an indicator that it is the calm before the storm. They may be trying to cover very slowly, and avoid spiking up the price.

Just a lame theory, but a theory.
