Kemble: I loved these passages from the Tennessean article... <<Dimensions are built from the ground up to be the ideal system for a home or small business customer," said Paul Bell, senior vice president for Dell's Home & Small Business Group. "Consumers in that market aren't going to be networking on a level like larger businesses, so what we do is focus on the latest technological advances for them." Those built-in advances include broadband technology capability, which will give home users with high-speed Internet access methods like cable modems or digital subscriber lines (DSLs), the same access speed they could find on their workplace network servers. "Having that capability built to order is something we can already do today," Bell said. "That's a big change coming for computing in the 21st century." Dell has also moved into the Internet service business, launching its "Connect Direct" project last fall on Dimension PCs with the help of AT&T WorldNet, Bell Atlantic, SBC Communications, US West and Cisco Systems. "We knew we'd be developing all kinds of portal and Internet services from that," Bell said. One of those advances, announced this week, is a meta-search portal called FAST launching this summer. Dell teamed with Fast Search and Transfer, a Norwegian company that develops search engine technology, to create a portal that will search virtually the entire Web in response to every request. Most existing search engines only mine through about 10% of the hundreds of millions of Web sites available. "FAST is one way to differentiate. I think you'll see more things like that from Dell," said Lou Mazzucchelli, senior vice president for Gerard Klauer Mattison & Co. in New York, noting that the Dimension models are "at the head of the performance pack." "They aren't always the lowest price, but they have very good price performance, and Dell is aggressive about expanding their business in that space.">> More pieces to the puzzle become more apparent all the time <G>...thanks for sharing the info. Best Regards, Scott
