Thank you Goldsnow for bringing into discussion Voltaire. Without trying to rain on your parade, Voltaire's christian name was not as exotic as you indicated. Indeed, it is possible that your hearing is superior to your spelling. Actually, his christian name was Francois-Marie. As to why they tacked on the Marie you would have to address your query to the Vatican who have (or had) various quaint notions on 'Marie' or 'Joseph'. Of course our Voltaire had very little to say in the matter - at that time. Perhaps... over the years he got his own back!

Anyway, his dictum which you quote, should figure on the heraldic Internet coat of arms!
