Fujitsu to End Domestic Production of DRAMs by 2001

Aug 05, 1999, (Comline via COMTEX) -- Fujitsu (6702) has gradually been shrinking its production scale over the last couple of years. Output of mainstay 64M DRAMs, which reached 3.3 million units per month in FY98, was initially to be cut to 2.5 million units per month in the current fiscal year. But continued sluggishness in the market has prompted the company to consider a further cut to 2 million units per month by fiscal year-end. A little further into the future, the company plans to stop production of DRAMs used in PC memory devices, for example, by 2001. Instead, the Iwate plant -- the company's only domestic DRAM production point -- will focus on flash memory and other products for cellular phones where demand is high.
