I don't think any of the big box makers can afford to not have a product utilizing the highest performing chip. This said, I think that there can be only one reason for Dell to not adopt the Athlon, and this would be that Intel has shown them their 0.18u roadmap and Coppermine performance projections, and assured them that they will be offering a competitive product.

The Firing Squads review was using Windows 98. I would like to see NT numbers.

This may have been a reason too. However, I do not believe the competitive risk was too significant - x86 is a very tough market and not too many people are willing to get into this. And, if someone is brave enough, I am sure they could pick up Rise for a lowly amount.
