I think you're pretty close. I feel sure this custom branched further out than Texas but, many of the settlers picked out a tree far enough away from the house so as not to be heard, and when they got angry,were grieving, or in despair, they would walk out to the tree and scream,yell,cuss, and kick that tree until they were emotionally drained and physically bushed, then walk back to the house feeling like a new person.
