The United States remains cool to a recent attempt by Japan to
win its commitment on joint action to prevent the yen's further
advance against the dollar.
Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers dismayed Japanese monetary
authorities Wednesday by distancing himself from their apparent
demand for joint currency intervention aimed at weakening the yen.
