Boeing caught in Taiwan turbulence

The Taiwanese government reportedly has told Taiwan's flagship airline to
cancel an order for 12 Boeing 777s in protest of the Clinton administration's
mainland China policy. Boeing had been working on the $2 billion deal since
Taiwan's China Airlines signed a letter of intent to buy the jets in 1995. But the
Tacoma News Tribune reports that instead, China Airlines is expected to
announce a major purchase of A-340 planes from European consortium Airbus
Industrie, perhaps as early as next week. China Airlines is still expected to
announce the purchase of 13 Boeing 747s in a separate deal.
