Yes, Christopher. The key is this sentence, from James Whistler:"Painting must aspire to the condition of music". He never had the courage to move away from figuration, but his emphasis was always on composition. Something like this DeKooning does achieve a musicality, that, if one gets rid of the preconception that something must be depicted, is obvious.....
