Korean chip maker Samsung Electronics Co. today confirmed that it has purchased a site in Hwasung, Kyonggi Province, to build a superfab complex.

Construction of the first buildings will begin in 2002, according to a company spokeswoman in Seoul. The new complex will supplement Samsung's multifab enclave in Kiheung, she said.

The new site will be the first for Samsung's projected 300-mm-wafer production, according to industry sources. The company currently has a 300-mm pilot line set up in Kiheung. It has not yet been decided what type of semiconductors will be made at the new complex, the spokeswoman said.

Samsung is completing the expansion of Line 9 at Kiheung, which will begin production later this year of 256-Mbit SDRAMs and Direct Rambus DRAMs.
