You may be right: Scott may not understand everything -
but there are other brilliant decision makers at Sun
who do understand everything, more than *you* (or
Scott) ever can.

Sun Free Solaris Program Surpasses 100,000 Shipments in Nine Months

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 5, 1999--

Membership In Solaris Developer Connection Surges, Strong
Demand From Microsoft Windows and Linux Developers

Sun Microsystems announced today that its Free Solaris
Program(SM) has shipped more than 100,000 copies of the Solaris
Operating Environment during the first nine months.
Sun also announced that membership in the Solaris Developer
Connection(SM) program has increased more than 200 percent with
Windows and Linux developers making up the majority of new Free
Solaris licensees. Due to the positive response, Sun will expand the
program to include the Japanese version of Solaris and will extend the
Free Solaris Program indefinitely.
"Developers are adopting Solaris because it allows them to focus
on creating innovative applications without having to compromise
world-class reliability and scalability," said Rich Green, vice
president, Solaris Products Group, Sun Microsystems, Inc.
"And through our involvement with the open source community, we
are making it easier to run Linux applications unmodified on Solaris
and to develop applications that are compatible across both platforms.
Free Solaris is further evidence that Sun's industry-leading software
technologies are enabling developers to '.COM' applications for the
Net economy."
"Sun's Free Solaris program offers developers the opportunity to
work with Solaris with little or no investment or risk," said Dan
Kusnetzky, program director, operating environments and serverware,
International Data Corporation. "They can load up the operating
environment, bring up some of their own software, and see for
themselves how Solaris compares with the operating environments
they're currently using. This gives the developer an opportunity to
determine where Solaris should fit in their development plans."
Developers worldwide have licensed Solaris through Sun's Free
Solaris Program for advanced computing research in areas such as
security, Internet, networking, software management and quality, and
computer architecture. Over 2,000 colleges and universities have
licensed Solaris software and are participating in numerous
collaborative computing initiatives with Sun.
Examples of collaborative efforts include Networks of
Workstations and Clusters at U.C. Berkeley, 3D Graphics and Java3D(tm)
technology at Brown University, and the World Wide Web Consortium at
Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
