Buying USW gets QWST 14 million customers and nothing else.

It also gets them the most extensive DSL rollout among the RBOCs. USWest is a company that has made and is making mistakes in the DSL market, but one that can at least be said to have gained some valuable experience in that market.

I agree with Scotsman that the completion of this deal is the best hope for Qwest as a company and even the best hope for QWST as a stock.

As I said the other day, I believe those who see hope for a quick and permanent rise in this stock from cancellation of this deal are fooling themselves. It won't happen, because Qwest's management has effectively explained to analysts why they need to go in this direction. Cancellation of the deal would cause a spike from short covering and from momentum players jumping in, and then it would get pummeled as analysts and investors realize that the company without USW is directionless and floundering.
