Deutsche's Yardeni: Y2K Bug May Cause 2000 Recession

NEW YORK -- A recession may result from year 2000 bug ramifications next year, said Deutsche Banc Securities Inc. Chief Strategist Edward Yardeni.

"This is one forecast I wouldn't mind being wrong about at all," Yardeni told CNBC Thursday.

Although the United States is Y2K-ready, he said, the rest of the world may not be, and that could indirectly effect the U.S. economy next year.

"I still think there's going to be a recession next year," he said. "The catastrophic stories I don't think are going to play out, but still there will be disruptions."

As a result Yardeni favors bonds over stocks.

"I think for the next six to 12 months ... government bonds, high-quality bonds will out perform stocks," he said. "I'd stay away from the credit risks and corporates and junk bonds."

Maybe I'm wrong, but it sounds to me like Yardeni is going soft on us. The U.S. is Y2K-ready?
