LONDON (August 5, 1999 12:20 p.m. EDT nandotimes.com) - British cable operator Telewest on Thursday unveiled plans to roll out new high-speed Internet and digital television services in conjunction with U.S. software giant Microsoft.

Telewest, Britain's second-biggest cable company and 30-percent owned by Microsoft, announced its plans as it reported pretax profit of 106.9 million pounds ($173.2 million, 160.35 million euros).

Telewest said it would launch a 150-channel digital television service in the fourth quarter, and added that a suite of interactive services would be introduced in the first quarter of next year.

"We have a clear broadband digital strategy for both digital television services and PC-based high-speed internet access," Telewest said in a statement. "By the end of next year, we will have launched games on demand, music on demand and video on demand."

Its plans come just a week after major consolidation in the fast-paced cable-Internet sector, in which communications outfit NTL teamed up with France Telecom to buy out the residential cable operations of Cable & Wireless.

Speculation has been rife that the NTL-France Telecom alliance will make a move on Telewest next to put the final piece of the cable jigsaw in place.

The cable sector must vie with fixed-line giant BT, which has already announced plans to roll out technology capable of bringing broadband internet capabilities to the home, and with satellite broadcaster BSkyB, which has already launched its own digital television plans.

Telewest stock edged up 1.75 pence on the news to 271.75 pence.
