Rockefeller Republicans are moderates, often considered liberal by "Goldwaterites", although somewhat unfairly, and at best they fit into the category of fiscal conservatives that I mentioned....

...Right- wing populists are reactionaries, in my view...

...Moderates fit into the squishy center, of course....

...Libertarians are conservatives according to the main cleavage of the dichotomy, which I described earlier, despite their "liberalism" on social issues...

...Individuals are often more complicated, as I mentioned with Darrell, but the fact is that there tend to be constellations of beliefs, due to underlying affinities, held on the gamut of policy questions, and therefore people are at least roughly "profilable"...

...No offense taken. Please do not take offense yourself, but I think that those who claim to be "free thinkers" are---- mistaken. No one is completely original, and coherent premises yield pretty predictable results. Anyway, it is not a question of comfort, but of trying to be fairly honest. For those who know what the moniker indicates, I am saying that I am an ex- leftist who largely voted for Reagan on defense grounds; that I embraced capitalism as the best means of achieving broad economic prosperity; that I am concerned with the decline of the West; and that I am an enemy of the Buchananites...

By the way, Joan, I am also an American, a native of Washington, an Annapolitan, a husband, a father, middle- aged, obese, balding, educated, ethnically diverse, a theist, doctrinally somewhat "liberal", from a lower middle class background, a Republican: all of these things are factual. Although they may be "labels", they have a certain utility, and there is no deep psychological reason for mentioning them. I chose "Neocon" as a moniker because I was joining news discussion threads, and I wanted to be somewhat specific in indicating the "faction" I most closely identified with: "Republican" or "conservative" was too broad. I am not part of "group think": neoconservatives are too diverse a group, and I fight with other neoconservatives too much, for that to be so.
But I am not in a vacuum, either, especially in politics, where in order to be effective at all, one has to make coalitions and alliances......

Rockefeller Republicans? That's Bush (father and son) and many of the prominent Republicans. The New World Order Republicans.
