They should back off it. This was called "digging your own grave," or more accurately, "letting the WSJ dig it for you."

I can tell you that this news did not go unnoticed by the Antitrust Division at DOJ. First MSFT gave away the IE to sink Netscape, now they think they can give away an ISP service to sink AOL? They will be in little fragments before that happens, regardless of their intentions to appeal any adverse ruling by Judge Jackson -- its called an injunction to prevent irreparable harm. This would affect every ISP, MSPG, ELNK, etc., another reason why it won't fly. What are they going to do now, argue internet access is now integral to the OS also? They already have little credibility.

And who will pay the local telcos for use of the lines. If MSFT thinks they can subsidize free internet everything with their huge cash stockpile that they accumulated through their OS dominance, they are just begging to be broken up.
