Let me answer your points...

<<My current desktop PC is a single point of failure and it crashes nearly every day.>>

Firstly I run a win98 desktop with a supporting winNT server. Either one rarely ever crashes and I run a whole slew of apps on it ranging from office ware to Quicken to developer tools. My NT server runs SQL Server, Oracle lite, and Lotus Domino serverware. Therefore I find the old tired argument of "crash" or having to "reboot" to be moot.

Remember if a desktop goes down that's one person in an org that's not productive. When the network goes down or the back-end goes down in a thin client model the entire department or organization is standing around the water cooler.

<<I suppose the limits are about the same as those you'd find on any PC priced under $500.>>

A PC is much more upgradeable and can run a greater variety of off the shelf applications that an NC can't (period).

<<The world is moving that way already. A PC's biggest job today is to give your web browser a place to run. It's also cheaper to support applications and data at the server side.>>

The net really is just an information repository. As user's require and explore more complex ways to model data a flexible & upgradeable desktop is required. Therefore PC's will get more complex wrt to richness of applications before they get simpler ... if I'm wrong tell me why there are zero commerical apps available for this model ?

<<And the Windows annual versions don't?>>
Windows is intuitive enough that it requires zero training between releases. New features are easily learned.

<<Most applications aren't very old anyway. I don't see this as an issue>>
I'm talking dumb terminal replacement ... NC's can't replace PC's so I'm not even considering that. The back-end software is either mainframe based on UNIX curses based if it's a vt220 ... or a plethera of other architecture specific back ends. These would all need to be re-engineered in Java.

<<What did they have before they had ethernet??>>
RS422, RS232 or other hypbrids if they are dumb terminals.

IMHO.
