Joe,

You are probably referring to the term "safekeeping". Generally does not work with BB stocks. The only sure way is to have the certs taken out of street name and into your name. Many so-called "safekeeping" stocks get loaned out because the brokers really don't know what they are talking about and don't understand the system. Practically all discount brokers do not provide "safekeeping".
