More Small Town Jetsom: Went down to the cafe at what happened to be lunch time, today, and there was a pushed-together table with a herd of the local guys at it. Like Stan, the Furnace Man. I tried to get his collection of late forties pin-ups from off the wall at his shop, but he didn't want to sell them. His partner did all the sheet metal work, like "brake" work, which is a tool for bending metal. He only has two fingers on one hand, as the brake got the rest once. (That would hurt. Yes.) I would go in there and get them to thread metal pipe for clamps, or make metal parts for roofs or exotic projects, back when I did exotic projects. They liked exotic projects, because it gave them a chance to show me how smart they were. Cvilization used to use a lot of things made out of bent metal; but not much at all anymore. Anyway, Stan and his buddies are discussing the work they're doing, which is volunteer work. They're building a very nice set of bran new restrooms in the new park. It's just up the main street from the cafe there, over the bridge, which runs over the creek. It's a pretty big creek, by standards other than Oregon. Like a river in many states. On the other side there, on the left, right on the creek, the City had the incredible foresight to buy a large warehouse sitting on about an acre and a half. It was old and beat up, and they tore it down and built a promenade park. They're doing a lot of these; they did the other side of the river all the way along the big park, behind the giant OED-sized new Library, the City Hall, and the Museum. (It's very, very nice.) (Place is getting Florentine.) So this park has grass, elaborate light poles with hanging baskets of flowers, retaining walls, roses, the creek, and nice benches. It's down off the road and very relaxing. These guys volunteered to build the restrooms that are going in, and they're building what looks like a little house, with paned windows. They're doing a super nice job, and I left them an anonymous note in there telling them we thought so. I walked across the bridge past the park on the way home, and down into the beautiful grass parkway to check it out. This is the small town part: These six or eight guys are across the street a block away for an hour lunch, and ALL the industrial-quality tools are sitting out here on the stacks of siding, sawhorseys, and truck beds. There's cordless screwdrivers, power saws, routers, expensive miter boxes and cutting tools ~ everything is just laying out here, practically on the street, where they left it when they went for lunch. I love it. I really do. It was quite a score for me.
