Hmmm, your story reminds of a Christmas present I gave out one year,
My brother-in-law had been telling me that how having a dog would cause much trouble and confusion in his house and there was no way he'd ever get one. A few months later I came across a sound activated toy puppy that sounded and moved realistically. I bought it.

Chrismas dinner was at their house and it was a large gathering. The puppy was in a wrapped up box with lots of small holes and a big bow the shook really good whenever the toy moved in the box.

A few of us knew the suprise and made sure that whenever my brother-in-law was nearby they would clap and make the toy activate.
He was getting himself wound up like a top watching this dang box move around and was looking quite excited. when the time came to open it he had convinced himself it was a real puppy. He opened it looked inside, gulped and slowly said "I knew it was a toy all along" as we all laughed and joked with him.

He still tells me he knew it was a toy, but I know that for a few minutes, he had a real dog of his own and loved it.
