You are right, one company will not tell you the whole story. However, looking at the indices may be misleading also (not too often though). I feel it is better to remove AOL and athm from the index at this moment, since they have their own problem recently. By removing them, you will have a better feeling of the market.

Early this year, I was following sox very closely. However, it turns out that I should remove intc and amd temporarily to get a better picture of the semi market at that time. Although most of the time you need to follow the big companies very closely, from time to time it is better to remove one or two from the index temporarily if the big guy has some special problem momentarily. The big guy can place two much weight on the index.

Just sold the last of my YHOO shares into this rally. I took profits with my gold stocks as well. Cash is king.
