Zeuspaul, thanks for elucidating your suggestion about indexing.

Sure, it's a great idea. I second your motion, in other words.

I would only caution SI members not to expect the indexes to be complete. Nobody -- and not even a group of bodies -- is going to be able to maintain an index consistently. (I know it took a lot of time for me to assemble a few "best of posts" anthologies "after the fact.") Only the most methodical and dedicated non-travelling homebodies (how many of those do we have?) could keep an ongoing eye on the proceedings. But SI could make it easier for the mere humans among us to keep some sort of track.

Joan

RE: Off Topic posts

Personally, I would like to have a checkbox so that I could label incoming posts in order of their importance (to me). That would make the task of reviewing a thread for "best posts" much easier.

But I definitely don't see the need for a checkbox to specify that a message I am posting is "off topic." Like everyone else, I already indicate that by typing in ***OFF TOPIC*** at the top of the message.

SI, so far as I know, does not really object to "genuine" off-topic messages, especially when they are clealy labelled as such. When SI Bob comes onto a thread and requests everyone to stop posting "off-topic" messages, what he seems to have in mind are the insult-slinging messages. Although they are indeed "off topic," those who write them do not think they are. So they will never label such messages "off topic" of their own accord, checkbox or no.
