Good evening Stefan:

Thanks for the article. Approximately two weeks ago I spoke with Covad regarding their DSL service in the New York area which is currently being serviced through Westnet (I guess qwest will become the new player on the block). For 192 K. service I was given a price quote of $199 per month plus $1000 for installation cost. There would be approximately a six-week waiting period between the time of placing the order and having it installed. This is for the Brooklyn New York area. In contrast, I am currently using optimum online cable modem service in Long Island New York which ends up costing me $30 of month which includes the cost of renting the cable modem ($19 per month for cable service plus $10 per month rental for the cable modem). Installation was free and as part of the introductory offer, the first month was free. In addition, anytime I would refer someone to their service, I would receive one month of free service. Now I don't know what cable modem service is going for it other locations but I have found that DSL service appears to be much more expensive.

It should also be noted that with regards to DSL service, I I was informed by one of my patients who works for the telephone company that all that is required to DSL service is that the home has to be within three miles of the officer supplying DSL service. With cable modem, it is my understanding that there must be fiber-optic cable running outside house which would require substantial upgrading of many existing cable systems. I may be wrong on this fact so any constructive criticism's or critiques would be appreciated.

Comments anyone?
