I think Lucino's logic is excellent, I often the same technique myself. The examples are accurate, as well. "Following the sectors" is incredibly important to a stock trader, but you have to follow them accurately.

When a heavily-weighted index component is stinking up an index (e.g. AOL in the net sector now due to irrational fear of "free" MSFT net access) irrationally, then it's often a good move to remove that component, otherwise your view of that sector will be unduly distorted and you will not get a clear view of what's actually going on. The INTC example is spot-on; this happens several times a year and if you don't understand it, it will warp your picks.

On another topic, relating to the prior post -- I hope we can keep the posts on this exceptional, very special thread that Eric started a few months ago, on a civil basis. In nearly 2,500 posts, KeepItSimple, there have been very few that are "out of line", that is not showing simple respect for your fellow traders. Perhaps you should reconsider the serious company you're in, and the appropriateness of your posts. There are a large base of dedicated traders following this thread, helping each other out without resorting to juvenile insults like you see on the "stock" threads, e.g. your AMZN thread wars. Thanks for tuning in to that!

No, I do recommend you to remove it from the index if a stock is doing too good in comparing to the rest of the sector.
