Uncle Frank and Thread,
A couple major differences in Globalstar vs Iridium. Globalstar is a Low Earth Orbit Satellite (LEOS) that requires no links between satellites. It is designed to put most of the smarts on land. Of course it is a CDMA based system resulting in a much more efficient system. The opening price point on a minute of Globalstar phone time will be priced at one-seventh of the cost of a minute of Iridium.(Ref>GilderTech Report)

An awful lot of the world is not effectively served by high speed bandwidth. A future competitor for satellite data service is Teledesic. They currently are planning a TDMA based system, but according to GilderTech will be performing a 3 month technology review that may cause them to wise up and go with a CDMA based system.

In any case all of this has obvious ramifications for QCOM as it further opens the market up to CDMA applications.

This month's issue of the Gilder Technology Report is the first in my subscription. It really represents a fine analysis of the bandwidth technology arena. Lot's of positive Qualcomm supporting analysis. Good stuff for big game technology investors(IMHO). George Gilder has a writing style that I enjoy. A sampling of his writing on the Telecosm can be found in the Gilder archives at Forbes ASAP.

Best Regards,
Tom
