Well, Michael, I never heard of a media personality's being called a "free thinker." Seems almost a contradiction in terms! And it the phrase is applied to a media personality with the views you enumerate, I'd say it was being used incorrectly, except with respect to point (1).

Even then, point (1) is not quite on target. Historically, the expression "free thinker" has been used to refer to individuals who question the prevailing religious orthodoxy. They have tended to be agnostics, rather than outright atheists.
