Interesting advice....but obviously I have nothing against pseudonyms, I was merely echoing, wryly, X's assertion that the names we pick say a lot about us, considering the nature of "X the Unknown"......

You are quite correct, Joan. There are other reasons as well. For starters, there are all too many loonies around; I know that there have been women (using their real names) who have been badly upset by finding extremely undesirable PMs in their mailboxes and realizing that their e-mail addresses were available in their profiles. One begins to worry.

There are people who have resorted to aliases after racial attacks. Also there are some who have realized that they may have acquaintances or coworkers on SI and feel uneasy about their postings being so easily identified.

We also have on SI people who for professional reasons don't want their identities out in the open--people who work for technology companies, consultants, securities analysts, and the like.
