The problem with insurance in its present state is that it attempts to budget for practically all medical expenses because of the low deductibles and co-payments. These tend to encourage overuse and abuse. The other problem is that even routine procedures are getting expensive with the mountain of paperwork due to Medicare and HMOs. The overhead costs have to be quite high because of the fraud and waste. Also, the Democrats seem more interested in advancing medical malpractice lawsuits more than anything else. With the government licensing physicians, one would expect the quality assurance to be much better and that they could limit malpractice claims. When a physician screws up, there is a beauracracy that's screwed up as well by permitting substandard performance. The Democrats also seem intent on expanding the government medical systems and ratcheting up the cost of medical care --- they want the private healthcare system to fail.
