Worst 4 sectors over past month:

Internet commerce -34.1%
Consumer services -31.8%
Internet services -23.7%
Securities brokers -20.2%

Best sector (by far):

Oil drilling +10.7%

I especially like the part about the securities brokers considering the results of that survey recently posted here showing investors are more bullish on the stock market than ever. I think in sentiment analysis you have to analyse whose sentiment it is and how well informed they are. I believe that investor survey is a contrary indicator, but is put/call ratio necessarily so? What about stock price of securities brokers? I think I'll look into that and see what correlations I can find, esp. to see if it's a leading or following indicator.

I think the time factor is really important. Maybe investor sentiment and put/call aren't so much contrary indicators but rather positive indicators with a time lag. Presumably the lag would be a few days for put/call vs. a few months for average investor sentiment. Stock prices often lead the fundamentals on which they're based, so maybe securities brokers are a leading indicator for the market in general. I'm no expert on this obviously so I welcome comments from anybody who's already researched this.
