HT Correspondent (New Delhi, August 6)

TWO TYPES of indigenously developed missiles, electronic warfare systems and the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) will reach production stage this year after user trials, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, announced today.

The announcement was made at a conference of directors of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), where Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee complimented the scientists for effectively meeting the challenge posed by denial of technology by certain countries.

Dr Abdul Kalam, in his address, also mentioned that efforts were on to commence the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) flight test phase this year. He said that despite technology denials and sanctions by some countries, India has established gallium arsenide and silicon foundries for making special grade devices, super computers and vital technologies required for missiles and other systems. Both Mr Vajpayee and Defence Minister George Fernandes focussed on the need to accord priority to mountain warfare technology.

Dr Kalam said that though DRDO's mission is design and development, some of its laboratories were in “operational readiness” and worked in close coordination with the armed forces during the Kargil operations. “When Agni reaches the target area, when 5.56 mm rifles reach the infantrymen, when the compo pack ready-to-eat rations is available at high altitude mountains, we see the demonstration of our technological capability,” Mr Kalam said.

The Prime Minister, in his inaugural address, noted that the Indian scientists' demonstration of capability to produce high-tech systems all by themselves would “provide strength to our political system to conduct an independent foreign policy”. Mr Vajpayee underscored the importance of the nuclear tests in 1998 and operationalising the Agni missile in 1999 as two factors that contributed to the country's self reliance in the strategic sector.

“The indigenously developed systems are making me confident about the guaranteed technological support available from our laboratories to the armed forces," Mr Vajpayee said.
