Now, George, be fair and a bit thoughtful. There are many postings that are made in jest that could be easily misunderstood with the addition of some conveyance that it is a jest. Earlier on this very thread, there was precisely such an instance. I agree that there may be overuse. On the other hand, when one can't access the nonverbal cues, the little shorthands do serve to communicate the context in which a posting should be read.
