How about USA Networks' attempted acquisition of Lycos back on February 9th? USA offered just a 2% premium to Lycos' share price, but on a split-adjusted basis that price was about 65. Meanwhile, Lycos closed today at 34 1/16.

As I understand it, the deal didn't work not because USA balked but because Lycos shareholders wanted more.

It's just one deal and you might just call USA insane for even trying it, but it is along the lines of the kind of evidence you are looking for.
