Another technique that I have used to screen for short candidates is to see who is pounding the table for a long position in one obvious short candidate and find out what else they are advocating as longs. That is how I found BDE. I was reading the Thrustmaster thread the weekend of July 4 and came across a poster called B. Positive. I checked his profile and found that he was also making similar postings to the BDE thread. As I dug into the background of BDE I learned that BDE happened to have filed an S-3 with SEC on July 1. The S-3 appeared to me to contain descriptions of several floorless convertibles and a number of private sales at well below the market price. I shorted BDE after the markets reopened the morning of Tuesday July 6 and it is moving my way. This approach depends on luck to some extent. I will leave it up to others to decide whether these people consistently exercise poor judgement in stock selection or are being paid to tout all these desparate companies. Whatever the case, the rabid long can be a source of leads for other shorts.
