ADAM sues DrKoop.com over Web content

Atlanta-based ADAM Software is suing DrKoop.com in federal court,
claiming the Internet health information company is improperly using
adam.com's medical encyclopedia.

ADAM wants the court to end its contract with DrKoop.com and award
damages.

ADAM, which is changing its name to adam.com this fall, owns an online
medical encyclopedia that lets visitors click on links, view pictures and read
articles related to topics being researched. The encyclopedia information,
which ADAM said took 20 years to gather, is used on health sites created
by Yahoo, Excite and WebMD.

DrKoop.com, based in Austin, Texas, is a Web site founded by former
Surgeon General C. Everett Koop. The company went public in June,
making Koop an instant paper millionaire.

The suit claims ADAM licensed its encyclopedia content to DrKoop.com in
1998. ADAM claims DrKoop.com started reselling the encyclopedia
information by letting hospitals and health care groups create links from its
Web site to DrKoop.com.

ADAM also claims DrKoop.com did not make an $85,000 payment required
by the license agreement. According to the suit, DrKoop.com has since
offered to pay the $85,000 and considers the agreement active since it was
not given 45 days' notice that it was in default.

Bob Cramer, ADAM chairman and chief executive, declined to comment.

Officials at DrKoop.com could not be reached for comment.
