Yes, I thought it was quite funny, and the fellow who played the store owner was allowed a "star turn", that is, the scope to upstage Cruise. When Cruise first goes out to the apartment of the deceased patient, and the daughter breaks down and kisses him, there is a sort of Chaplinesque quality to it, pathetic, touching, and almost funny. Again, the woman playing the daughter is fabulous, and reminds me, in the sheer truthfulness and nuance of her performance, of Vanessa Redgrave in "Howards End" (which was the best thing in that movie). When he meets the prostitute, there is something touching and funny in his chagrin, and while it is one of the surreal features that his wife should call on the cell phone just before consummation (isn't that just what would happen in a dream, as the guilt built up?), and there is some relief, there is also ruefulness, and consciousness of the absurdity of the situation, and it is somewhat amusing.There are many moments like these, of wit and sweetness and bemusedness at the human condition.....
