Note: I'm paying $20 for Earthlink and $25 for my second phone line and logging in at 52Kbaud. With the Pac Bell service I am guaranteed 384Kbaud*, and since I am within 3500 feet of the sub station, they think I might connect as high as 1.5Mbaud.

Nice job Frank! PacBell in SLO rolled out DSL as well for that price. I am trying to convince my roommate that we need it, but so far it hasn't worked <g>.

I believe that PacBell gurantees 384K download and 128K upload. Plus it's a full time connection, surf and talk at the same time! The only other problem that I have is the $200 setup charge. But, I can handle it. Let me know how you like it....

Uncle Frank and Justin: I have had PacBell DSL at home for a couple of months now; when the tech came up from Pleasanton to install, he tested it out, initially, at a blazing 3.5M rate; it settled down to 1.5 to 2.0M and appears to function at that range fairly consistently.
I'm about 1700 feet from the switching station, and I believe that has a positive effect on performance.
However, the service has been erratic; net traffic jams cause the system to run at a crawl; when I contact tech support, they usually have some problem with backbone, and blame IBM.
Anyway, when the system is running, it's a beautiful thing; the only limitation of speed is how fast you can hit the key to move on.
I believe it is worth the $39 + ISP charge/month and have recommended it to friends here in Sonoma County with the proviso that they have a
56K ISP backup provider, especially if trading on the net.
Regards,
James
