As Akula will more than likely ignore the empirical evidence that directly contradicts his position, please allow me to provide it; The book "More Guns, Less Crime" by Professor John R. Lott Jr.. Professor Lott teaches crime deterrence, law, and economics at the University of Chicago Law School. His research is extensive, being based primarily on statistics and studies conducted by the FBI and the U.S. Dept. of Justice in the years from 1983 to 1998. His conclusions are objective and irrefutable in light of his sources. Bottom line, the increased presence of firearms in the hands of law abiding citizens have had the effect of dramatically lowering the occurrence of violent crime, property crime, and crime in private households in every jurisdiction where carry of firearms for private citizens is legal. The direct opposite is true in jurisdictions where firearm carry is banned or severely limited. The crime rates in those jurisdictions has continued to climb. Proffesor Lott had no agenda, pro or con, in the firearms debate when he began his research. He was merely attempting to do a comprehensive study on the relationship of firearms and crime. He has admitted to being astounded at the results of his research. Because of his book, Proffessor Lott has become person non grata in circles habituated by the anti-gun crowd and his work has been ignored, when possible, by the liberal media. He has received numerous threats on his life by the enlightened members of the Peace, love, Guns are evil tools of the Devil crowd. I suggest his book to everyone on this thread and challenge everyone to verify his facts independently and come to their own conclusions.
