Hi, Penni! Did I really miss four thousand posts? Most of us have been having the same arguments for so many years, that I hope I did not miss anything crucial. Well, I probably did, but like Terrence's creative although cruel ant post, I suspect some kind persons will bring the most special ones to my attention.

You bought CW an iron? Ha ha!! I doubt it will be much used at college, except perhaps to iron the wrinkles out of term papers about to be turned in which got inexplicably messed up during raucous parties. That is about what irons were used for when I was in college, at least. Perhaps today's young adults are much neater and tidier, however.

Much to my surprise, my daughter decided she was not quite ready to learn to drive. This revelation came after I had taken her to the DMV to find out about a learner's permit. I was only really doing it to show her her that I was not in any way overprotective, when in fact like many parents I have deep-seated terrors about letting her go towards adulthood in a speeding car. But apparently so does she, since she had a nightmare about getting on the freeway and has decided to wait a little while.

One very healthy thing about my daughter is that she has a good sense of when she is taking on too much growing up at the same time, and occasionally slows down the pace so she can assimilate it all. One very strange thing about me is that I do not really like driving on freeways, which I inherited from my mother, who gets everywhere on surface roads. When I was a young woman I thought that was a ridiculous neurosis, but soon enough settled into it myself, after vowing NEVER to be like my mother in any way. I do hope my daughter has not inherited it as well. Her father loves to drive on freeways, like most men do, I guess, so she has had at least one good role model in that regard.

In any event, we are still going to try home schooling, for a year at least. If it doesn't work out, she can certainly go back to regular high school. The school we are thinking of trying is laurelsprings.com, in case anyone is curious about distance learning for older children. I think it is particularly important that parents not be overly involved in teaching teenagers, since as you surely know there are already plenty of issues of dominance, independence, separation, etc. going on in this age group. I am really looking forward to not having to schedule vacations around the school year. I would like to spend a longer time in Ireland this coming year, maybe three weeks in the spring or early fall.

Are you okay, Penni? It's about time to make that long journey and actually drop CW off at college. I see my entire life changing, like stepping off a precipice, when I make that trip with Briana, although perhaps I am exaggerating its importance, because I am already discovering horrible white hairs sprouting on my head, and indeed pulled two of them out this week. Not only are they white, but they are much thicker than my regular hair, and stick straight up. Yuck!

Of course, from reputable reports I hear that you still strut and cluck like a spring chicken, so I am sure you do not have such pedestrian problems of the rapid aging process going on!
