EarthLink Named Official ISP for National
Insurance Provider USAA

EarthLink's Largest Affinity Partnership to Date Offers EarthLink Sprint
Internet Access to USAA's 3.3 Million Members

biz.yahoo.com

PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 9, 1999-- EarthLink (Nasdaq:ELNK - news)
and USAA Alliance Services Co. today announced a three-year agreement that makes EarthLink
Sprint the official Internet service for the 3.3-million-member insurance and financial services
powerhouse. The centerpiece of the USAA arrangement is a customized Internet service offered
to USAA members. The partnership marks EarthLink's largest affinity agreement to date.

The co-branded service, called USAA Internet Connection Powered by EarthLink Sprint, will
be available to all USAA members. USAA members who use the long distance services of
EarthLink's strategic partner, Sprint (NYSE:FON - news), will receive additional member
benefits. USAA Internet Connection members will also get a USAA-customized EarthLink
Sprint Personal Start Page.

USAA and EarthLink were originally brought together by EarthLink's strategic partner, Sprint, a
long-time USAA alliance partner. One major benefit of EarthLink's strategic alliance with
Sprint was access to Sprint's extensive marketing channels. Since the alliance was
consummated in June 1998, EarthLink has grown an average of 166,000 members per quarter,
making it one of the fastest growing Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the industry.

``EarthLink's partnership with Sprint enhances our ability to leverage Sprint's close relationship
with its major alliances and marketing partners to grow our member base organically,' said
Bill Heys, senior vice president at EarthLink. ``This, in turn, allows EarthLink to grow steadily
without having to rely on mergers or acquisitions to gain significant numbers of new members.
Our agreement with USAA demonstrates the value EarthLink Sprint Internet service provides
partners, and offers USAA members a great member benefit.'

EarthLink customized its Personal Start Page especially for USAA members, building it to
USAA's exact specifications. Features of the new page include one-click access to the USAA
Web site, unique ``Communication,' ``Personal Organizer' and ``Fun Links' sections, a
software center, and links to USAA-recommended sites.

``We have a very strong relationship with our members, and they trust us to look out for their
interests, so the task of choosing an Internet service partner for them was very important,' said
Janice Marshall, president of USAA Alliance. ``EarthLink has a long track record of top-notch
customer service. That reputation, plus EarthLink's ability to build a customized Personal Start
Page that fit our members' needs, made our decision very easy.'

USAA members can read more information about the offer in their monthly USAA magazine or
