KM,

I like trading CIEN too but sometimes it turns into a limp biscuit for long periods where it just sits there while the rest of the market moves around.

Drives me crazy.

KM,
actually I do both. When some small stock gets fresh momentum and makes nice oscillations on big volume, it presents opportunity for relatively low risk plays, several in/outs per day. Often momentum carries over couple days more. This type of plays is done initially on pure tape reading, when trader sees and exploits periods of accumulation (he buys), slow movement up (he holds), explosion with increasing volume and wild pace (he sells).
Then oscillations can be played off recognizable bottoms (and tops if stock is available for shorting, but shorting is not a good idea on initial runs usually - better to wait until top is reached and downtrend established).
Besides, I keep an eye on some daytrader favorites. Usually those are former hiflyers that move easy and tend to attract a lot of attention on any news. Many of them are on relatively low levels and present more or less safe buys if slightest reason for movement surfaced.
