pass, pass: Being a DSL engineer myself I think I know a few points. Although DSL is a losing technology limited by its physical drawback, DSL will be running second to cable in a few years. What I meant is DSL is not enough for AOL to lean on as its main broadband medium. I am not sure about DSL being reliable, but I am sure it's not as reachable as cable because of the distance constraint. Yes, cable is a sharing medium, but it's far cheaper for Cable companies to move fiber nodes closer to home to cure congestion than RBOCs building COs closer to homes. DSL is an expensive technology with lower bandwidth and leathal disadvantages, that's why they can only serve as a distant second to cable business. Wait a few years you have to agree with me, but it's better to know that early than otherwise. Let me emphasize: DSL is not on the same scale as Cable.

ATHM needs ATT as much as ATT needs ATHM. There are drawbacks with working for ATT, but the advantages of doing so far outweigh the drawbacks.

The fact that there are so many DSL ISP's competing makes their service more reliable.

pass, can you clarify this for me? In my area (Salt Lake City) there is only one company to call for DSL and that is US West. Yes there are ISP's that offer DSL but none of them offer the line. I have found (least in my area) ISP's to be very reliable for years. They have migrated from V.34 to V.90 to ISDN and now DSL and the only problems they seem to have are associated with last mile technology companies or backbone providers. Only problem in my area is that I have only two choices for that last mile, US Worst and TCI.

<<<there are so many DSL ISP's competing makes their service more reliable. I'm long COVD,NPNT and ATHM, I believe all of them will make it big but I am uncomfortable about ATHM being run by old ATT bureaucrats.>>>

You raise some excellent points here. There are some CLECs which may be encroaching as well (e.g., TWTC). ATHM's hands are tied, though. Until someone can take the helm and start making some tough decisions for the good of ATHM, we will continue to languish
