The Athlon, like the Pentium XX and Xeon, is not universally compatible with all expansion cards

Sorry, Paul, but I configure servers on a regular basis, and can tell you from direct, personal, hands on experience, that the pentium, pentium pro, pentium II, pentium III,and Xeon are not "universally compatible" with all expansion cards either. The issue is really more one of motherboards and bios than cpu's. Despite the above, intel sqeaked through a few sales if my recollection is correct....

What matters, for intel as well as AMD, is that there are some combinations of cpu, motherboard, bios, video card, disk controller, network adapter, multiport card, etc. that do work. Then IBM, Compaq, etc. package, support, and guarantee the compatibility of those combinations.

That is why having tier 1 vendor announcements is crucial, and that is why this introduction is looking so very, very, good.

Dan

Do you mean use the internet to spread rumors and fud? Now who would do that?

Pual Re <<The K7 may get a bad rap for INCOMPATABILITY - as a guy named WINDSOCK suggested when he noticed that the laughALONs don't have the Microsoft Windows Compatability Logo.
And we all know, the Internet is a great place to "alert" folks to incompatability problems.>>

You are now really reaching! I understand you being anxious!

1. Athlon coming tomorrow from major tier one OEMs
2. MHz above Intel's best coming
3. Considerable performance premium over Intel's best at same MHz.
4. 25% below PIII, which is still plenty for AMD and its corresponding market cap.
5. If Intel's respond by price cuts, it will significantly, undeniably hurt them, their ASP's, profit margins and their shareholder. No segmentation strategy to the rescue here!

Oh yeah, "The K7 may get a bad rap for INCOMPATABILITY" and "the Internet is a great place to "alert" folks to incompatibility". I guess Intel got nothing to worry about.
