<as far as the pricing you refused to mention, for this "simple purification device," i'll happily post them.>

Did you bother to [click] on the word "Pricing" on the link I provided? Guess not. Otherwise you would have seen the entire price list. [Edit: Yes you did click on that link - I just saw at the bottom of your post that you cut & pasted the price list that I lead you to.]

<let's get real practical here: how long do you think you'll be able to stand dirty underwear, before using some of your 'handpumped' katadyn purified water to clean up in? and last time i looked, it takes both a soaking, spotting, washing and rinsing and sometimes a second washing and rinsing just to remove ordinary stains in undergarments. >

Yeah let's get practical here. Who needs "purified" water to wash clothes? That drop or two of Clorox in unpurified water, should work just fine for washing your underwear. Boiling water should do the trick too.

<last time i looked, it takes both a soaking, spotting, washing and rinsing and sometimes a second washing and rinsing just to remove ordinary stains in undergarments>

DUH. Who's gonna soak, spot and sometimes do a second washing and rinsing ... during a water shortage??? Obsessive-Compulsive's maybe "yes". Others, "no".

<you don't think men who have to suddenly trod to and from the military provided water trucks for their family's daily water requirement are NOT going to want clean socks? or clean shorts?>

You're starting to sound like Ken and his "wifey" B.S.

Speaking of the military ... What did the soldiers do during WWI, WWII, VietNam war and Dessert Storm do about those nasty stains? Soak, spot and sometimes do a second wash and rinse??

<and how about those with babies. do you think all these young mothers can afford $249 for a katadyn water filter, PLUS SPEND ALL THAT TIME pumping the durn thing while little one is screaming bloody murder for their popped diaper pen to be removed from their fleshy thigh?>

OK. Help us out here. What's your recommendation? How much does it cost? Less than $249?

Cheryl

BTW: I'm not telling anyone that they must have a water filter. Though it's probably a good idea. California Governor's office says "Boiling water before use is the safest method of purifying water, but also have a water purification kit on hand."

Everyone should have as much water on hand, by year-end, that they can store. You can manage pretty long without food. But, you definitely need water.

For drinking water & food preparation, I'd start buying "bottled" water now. It's too heavy to buy it all at once - Unless you have a pick-up truck! Besides, if you wait too long, everyone would be doing it at the same time. Plus, when you buy a gallon or two each time you go shopping, you don't feel (or look) like a "kook".

Buy a gallon or two each time you go shopping. I definitely would not buy Evian - unless you want to impress your friends. Too pricey. Just buy the gallon generic brands you see on grocery shelves. Start buying it now, put it in your pantry and/or under your bed and just forget about it. It stores well for about a year. Some say 6 months.

In early December (or earlier) begin to fill up large containers with water ... in your garage, backyard, storage unit, under your bed.

Don't wait until the last 2 weeks in December. THAT would cause a strain with the water system. They're only set up for historical, average usage. Start earlier. Many will wait until the tail-end. That's a mistake. You can always dump out the container, disinfect, and put fresh water in closer to Jan 2000. Better safe than sorry.
