I also realize that I have no right to tell people how to prepare or what to do here. I am sincerely hoping for the best. If the worst occurs, my family's will to live would be devastated.

I see no point in building an Ark, like Noah did, as some people on this thread are doing. If the worst case scenario takes place and the grid goes down and many people die from lack of preparation, Life will become less meaningful to me and my family.

I don't think I'd want to live if the World went under and most people died as a result of this crisis.

................................................................

Rarebird, Do yourself and family a favor and read this excerpt from your post. I usually assume people are sinciere in posting their views. (it's the Pollyanna in me showing) It's one thing to think that the worlds computers are gonna freeze up and there will be a global depression, it's quite another to say that you and your kids would not want to live. Are you teaching your children this gloom and doom? Do you realize how damaging it is to kids to instill this kind of fear in kids? I assume you are sinciere. If I promise to sell my AOL stock on Monday will you promise stop fishing thru all those "Y2K THE END IS UPON US" articles you keep posting all over SI.

BTW If the world does'nt come to an end Jan. 1 2000 you have a good start on a swimming pool. D.H.

Rarebird. "I have not judged you for not preparing". Thanks. That makes me feel a lot better.

"5,000 gallons of Poland Spring Water". I like the German Spring Water better. gg. But nothing wrong with hoarding that much Spring Water I guess if you believe there could be enough bottled Spring Water left for all of us if everyone heeds your advice.

"I have not withdrawn all my money from the banks or brokerage accounts". Good idea. Gold and cash under Mattress: That could vanish faster than anything else. But then I heard that the crime rate is a lot better now in NY under this mayor and you have it probably buried anyhow.

All in all I was not too worried about Y2K and the stock market. But if there are lots of people out there subscribing to the same theory you have, there will be an awful lot of buying going on before the year ends. One poster already said that he has a lot of buying to do after your post!?. I don't want to put a ggg here. What will this do to inflation? But I agree. Stacking up for a cpl of weeks may not hurt. Six months? Yes, that would make for a bad Y2K. Everybody would probably be consuming in the first 6 months of 2000 what they bought in 1999 and the economy would be slowing down. Oh my. NOW I KNOW WHY YOU ARE SO BEARISH. Greenspan better not raise interest rates now. Every person has their right to their own fears. But. Ever heard of the Radio message: The Martians are coming, the Martians are coming?

I hope you feel better about this whole situation as closer we come to Y2K. At this point I'd rather be an optimist than a pessimist when it comes to Y2K. Life is a lot easier that way. You see, I live by the quote: You only live once, enjoy it.

Sonny

Hey, Rarebird, I have an unused bomb shelter kit from the 50's and have been waiting for someone like you to sell it to. Cream puff condition, complete with geiger counter, water purifier tablets, gas power generator, and lots of Ed Sullivan tapes to play on your VCR. Whadayasay?

5,000 gallons of Poland Spring water? Is Poland Spring water a public traded company? What's its symbol? I am going to buy some shares and then to short it at the end of 99. That would be a good y2k play. What do you think?

Rarebird. Not too shabby mine is the 9th reply to your message.

1) I hope that if a crisis occurs you think of more than your family and share the good fortune that you have (in a fire place and water) with your neighbors. Please, please if something catastrophic does happen share openly as though it is the end of the world. Do not hoard it to yourself in a time of other's need.

2) While your case may be a little excessive, I do feel that everyone who can should feel that they would be comfortable living without the benefits of electricity, running water, and telephones. This will mean different things to different people. To me, this means knowing my neighbors, having a couple cans of food, having a couple bottles of liquids to drink (yes, I'll admit at the moment this is a couple of liters of soda and a bottle of apple juice in the closet... but that's all I need... yuk brushing teeth with apple juice), and knowing where a local source of heat (neighbors generator, local gym ect..) is in the winter.

Notice that that stuff was general... not Y2K specific. It is a disaster relief workers dream that everybody would have this stuff. With the exception of a nuclear war (where everyone's screwed anyway) in general a disaster won't last more than 2 or 3 days. This includes a tornado, hurricane, a Y2K crash, a flood. If you can make it through the first two days on your own you will be fine.

Gold really won't do you much good. It doesn't taste very good, and if you trade it for something that does taste good and all you have is 1 ounce chunks (or one pound) you are not going to find anybody with enough food to make it worth your while. $250 for a bunch of bread because you can't make change is a little pricey. Your personal labor will often be a better commodity.

Dr.Zax

-I guess that sounds a little idealistic and socialistic, but I'll do my part whether or not you do yours.
