on a more serious water note, those who are eyeing water in neighborhood streams lakes and streams as their 'y2k contingency plan' you might want to jot down this address and contact them for a postage paid 'sample bottle' for FREE water purification testing of your planned backup resource before peeling off $249 PLUS SHIPPING for a katadyne water filter hand pump. (PS> anyone actually going to buy one of those things and then use a timer to tell us how long it took them to 'purify on gallon of water?' enquiring threaders want to know.

anyhow, that address:
WATER ANALYSIS LABORATORIES
PO Box 64420
ST Paul, MN 55164

the 2 inch diameter by 5" tall postage paid shipping contaier bottle contains:
1 smaller clear plastic sample bottle to be filled with suspect water
1 rolled up 8.5 x 11 "Instruction Sheet for Untreated Water"

THERE IS NO CHARGE.

The catch, if you consider it one, is that you have to indicate on the questionaire/instruction form who your nearby Sears and SassBack retailer location address is. They will forward your results to that Sears store as well as to you.

The questions are few:
1) Type of sample
2) Source of sample
3) color of sample when drawn
4) odor of sample
5) taste of sample
6) does it stain other items
7) type of plumbing
8) number of people affected
9) location where sample was drawn
10) any water modification equipment currently in use.

that's it. usually takes two weeks.

i'll do a quickie dogpile search and see if they have a website.

here's a list of happy katadyn customers. quite impressive. might suggest trying some of the 'questionable sourced lake water' by using this, WHILE YOU CAN STILL GET MEDICAL ASSISTANCE BEFORE 12/31/99 rolls around.

Why KATADYN Water Filters are the best in the World

For over 50 years, Katadyn has been the filter relied on by militaries, missionaries,
hikers, explorers and professionals worldwide for safe and dependable drinking
water. Due to the longevity of the unique ceramic filter design, the Katadyn Filters
are the most economical, lasting 20 to 100 times longer than any other filters on the
market. Even after thousands of gallons of use, the Katadyn Filters can be cleaned,
dried and stored indefinitely (unlike many filters which, no matter the number of
gallons they claim to filter, are only good for one 'season' of use). Compared to
other products, Katadyn Filters are the most field maintainable (easiest to clean and
maintain without any special tools) of any filter made.

With the exclusive design of Katadyn Filters, even heavily polluted water can be
restored to safe drinking water without the use of harsh or distasteful chemicals. The
simple design of Katadyn assures a long lasting and easy to maintain device that can
far outlast any other filtration or purification system on the market today. Safe water
can be attained anywhere at any time for you and your family.

How can this be, you might ask. The microporous ceramic element, impregnated
with a fine silver powder is the core of all Katadyn filters. The average pore
diameter of only 0.2 microns prevents even the smallest bacteria from passing
through. In this way, the micro-organisms that cause dangerous illnesses including
typhoid, dysentery, cholera, E. Coli and amoebic dysentery are safely filtered from
the water. Protozoa cysts (including Giardia and Cryptosporidium), fungi, parasites,
and spores are also prevented from passing through the filter.

Independent Laboratory Tests and years of use in some of the most extreme
conditions on earth assure Katadyn's quality. A list of long-term Katadyn users
include the International Red Cross, the World Health Organization, the Armed
Forces of Switzerland, Germany, the US and Portugal, the US Navy Seals, US Forest
Service, the National Park Service, the United Nations, the Federal Bureau of
Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Swiss Tropical Institute.

- According to the W.H.O. ( World Health Organization,) contaminated water is the largest
health problem, NOW, PRE-Y2K
in the entire world - 50,000 people die each day worldwide due to
waterborne disease.

- The CDC (Center for Disease Control, Atlanta, GA, USA) estimates that 1,000,000
people in the US get sick from microbiologically contaminated water each year and
1,000 die as a result. Please note this is PRE-Y2K CDC Reporting Statistic

- Waterborne gastrointestinal infections account for 80% of all diseases in the world.

- 25% of all hospital beds worldwide are occupied by people who have become ill
due to waterborne disease.

Buy a Katadyn for peace of mind in an emergency. If you need a good filter for your
family for weeks, for months or for years, Katadyn is the filter to have.

The Katadyn TRK Drip Filter is extremely easy to use and requires no pumping. Just
pour up to 2½ gallons of "raw" water into the top compartment and water slowly
drips through the three ceramic filter elements into the bottom container. Set the
Katadyn TRK Drip Filter on your counter-top and you are ready to ‘make' drinking
water. Removes E.Coli, cryptosporidium, cholera, typhoid, salmonella, etc. as do
all Katadyn filters. Crystal clear drinking water pours out from the faucet in front.
Filters up to 10,000 gallons of murky water into clear, healthy drinking water.
Provides up to six gallons per day for a minimum of 4½ years of full time use -- at
about 1½ cents per gallon.
Weighs 12 lbs. Shipping is $16.

****
see, daffodil, i knew if I looked far enough, i'd find something ron and ck forgot to mention. of course, the replacement filter cartridges are darn near impossible to get now for ANY Katadyn.

so anyone relying on these, better get in line AFTER THE MILITARY, and US Forest Service :) Hint: get some gold, bribe a soldier. i've heard they drink a lot of water just standing in those waterlines! :)
