"can't be all things to all markets" That pretty near explains it all. Coherent does well in medical markets because they have familiarity with the FDA regulatory process, that is required of all instruments used on human beings. Even if Cymer could develop a better medical laser than Coherent it would take anywhere from 2 to six years to get approval from the government to get permission to market it. Nothing in this area moves quickly. I think that Coherent, which is a pretty good company in its own right looks at Cymer's market and says, if we develop a better laser for any given application we don't need to jump through all these government regulations to get it to market. Very enticing. The big market for Coheren't laser's was not ophthamology but urology. Seems that they were working on a laser that would destroy urological tumors, which are now either removed surgically or destroyed chemically. My information is somewhat dated, but having sold medical devices for a career I'm well aware that the bureaucratic tape to get a product to market is not worth it to many companies. Just my 2 cents.
