I own the two companies you mentioned, so know exactly what you mean. Fortunately I got off Ciena's fast ride when TellLabs first announced the buyout and didn't get in again until it hit bottom and started back up. With JDS, I've ridden it both ways and not been sorry.
Tonight someone wrote asking about NN's conference call and while checking the website, I found the following:

Now, either I'm really out to lunch and missed the release or Canada's operating on a different calendar.
Here's the text:
BT Deploys 100th Newbridge Node for its Broadband Multiservice Data and Internet Platform
BT's Customers Benefit from Internet Protocol and other Next Generation Services
KANATA, Ontario, August 4, 1999 -- Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) today announced that British Telecommunications plc (BT), one of the world's leading telecommunications service providers, has deployed its 100th MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch in its nationwide Multiservice (data and Internet) Platform (MSP).
BT has introduced this MSP to help meet its U.K. customers' needs in the Internet age.
Using the Newbridge broadband multiservice, multi-access switches at the edge and core of the network, the MSP supports a wide range of existing and new Internet protocol (IP) and other advanced data services. This enables BT's customers to benefit from IP virtual private networks (VPNs) and other advanced services.
"We've designed the MSP network to support current IP demand and account for the expected massive growth of IP services in the future," said Paul Excell, program director for IP and data services, BT. "The MSP is absolutely crucial to our strategy for business and residential customers - everything else is being built around this core managed routing/switching platform. With the MSP investment, we are showing that we are very serious about providing the data services and solutions our customers need to succeed into the 21st century."
Dataquest, a Gartner Group Company and a leading industry research firm, predicts explosive market growth for integrated broadband services, particularly for data services. According to Dataquest, the data service market in the United Kingdom is expected to grow to more than U.S. $7.5 billion by 2002.
Installed in the networks of more than 350 service providers worldwide, the MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch provides a broad range of interfaces and service offerings. These include IP, videoconferencing, integrated services digital network (ISDN), local multipoint distribution service (LMDS), circuit emulation for advanced private line services, voice over frame relay and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and digital subscriber line (xDSL) services.
BT's end-to-end network and service management capabilities are provided through the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager. It permits end-to-end network and service management across multiple technologies including IP, ATM, frame relay and time division multiplexing (TDM). It also enables service providers to adapt their networks as the needs of their customers evolve, allowing them to quickly introduce new services. In addition, the 46020 Network Manager enables service providers to view their networks and control their network services via the most sophisticated, dynamic, Web-based interface in the industry. The 46020 Network Manager's high scalability means it can support and manage more than 250,000 service connections and permit more than 255 operators to monitor and manage the network at the same time.
Its unique network partitioning capability enables BT to segregate its network into customer-specific partitions and provide flexible, premium quality VPNs to its customers. ATM-based VPNs offer the same high level of reliability, scalability and quality of service guarantees as dedicated private lines.
"The deployment of the 100th Newbridge broadband multiservice switch is a significant milestone for BT," said Pearse Flynn, executive vice president and general manager, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Newbridge Networks. "It demonstrates the success of BT's network to accommodate the exploding demand for broadband services from its customers."
