The cost of solar panels has come down a lot in the past few years, but it is still not economical in most cases for housing. I believe it will be practical in about 10 more years.

One of the interesting technologies coming on pretty strong is fuel cells. Within 2 years home units will be available that will run on natural gas, and compete with electricity from the grid that costs about .08 KWH, which is about average in a lot of places.
