Usha Communications set to launch brand abroad
(Monday, August 9, 1999)

Rajorshi Biswas in Calcutta

Usha Communications Technology (UCT), the Portland (Oregon, US)-based wholly-owned software company of Usha Beltron Group, is set to emerge as one of the first Indian software company to launch its own brand of products in the global market.

UCT's telecom billing product, Unicorn, which is also the flaghip brand, is alone expected to chip in revenues of over US $20 million during 1999-2000. UCT had posted a turnover of US $10 million (approx) during 1998-99.

UCT, formerly UBEST, last week entered into a tie-up with global technolgy major Lucent to provide billing solutions for its clients worldwide. Lucent had sought a global bidding to select a billing system partner.

UCT has already made a dent in the global market through co-branding and marketing of Unicorn with Compaq. The company has also entered into a series of business partnership agreement with Sybase and other US-based software companies like Exxact Technologies and Iona Technologies. The company also has a original equipment tie-up with Harris Corp of USA to supply performance monitoring system (PAN).

UCT currently has 25 global clients for its products and also has some other branded products like Medusa and PAN. Some others brands are in the process of being launched.

"UCT is trying to position itself as a middle-ware company focused on billing, customer-care and mediation software," said Amitava Dutta, vice-president (product management), UCT.

In a display of technical prowess, UCT has developed another high-end intelligent network (IN) product. IN has long been the domain of global majors like Siemens, Alcatel, Lucent, Nokia and others.

The IN platform developed by UCT has passed the beta test and is currently undergoing trial runs in Europe. The average cost of such an IN application costs around US $7 million at present, but the UCT product will be around US $2 million. UCT is gearing up to promote this product as the next major brand.

Another short messaging system (SMS) product is also in the pipeline which will be launched globally.
