per symantec, to reset system doctor:

you can first save your current settings via file, save configuration. then close sysdoc and go to start, run. type in:

SYSDOC32 /RESET then click OK.

(note the space in that line between 2 and /.)

sysdoc then restarts. here's where i rebooted to get it to work for my scanning prob. but keep one thing in mind... when you save current settings, restoring the configuration may reintroduce the problem. i tried resetting with first saving my settings. then i thought that it was possible that i was just reintroducing the same old same old, so i deleted the saved settings (i'd named them something easy to spot like 'saved settings'. <g3>)

apparently this reset sysdoc remedy is a popular one on the symantec tech support site. i saw it used several times. that's why it came to my mind for your rescue disk alarm prob.

imo, hp, the above procedure is not in any way dicey.
